Tori Amos(原名 myra ellen amos)，被誉为"黑白键盘上的红发精灵", 是运用 70 年代的音乐手法于富有文学性的另类摇滚之中的为数不多的几个女性歌手兼作曲家之一。她的音乐具有 kate bush 的编曲风格和 joni mitchell 的诗意，她在摇滚音乐中采用钢琴作为主要乐器的做法恢复了 70 年代的音乐传统。
从两岁开始，Amos就与钢琴结下了不解之缘。她拥有一个辉煌的童年，4 岁时，她在教堂的唱诗班演唱并弹钢琴；5岁便可以做到随意演奏任何她听到的音乐。随后她成为获得巴尔的摩的 peabody 音乐学院学位最年幼的学生。
13 岁Tori便开始在酒吧进行表演。1980年她发行了第一张单曲“Baltimore”。1983年她奔赴洛杉矶录制了试音带，也正是这次洛城之旅，让她意识到了自己的歌唱天赋。她逐步将自己的精力由钢琴转移至了歌唱。1987 年，atlantic 唱片公司与她签约，录制了她的第一张专辑《y kant tori read》。这是一张非常失败的专辑。
随后Tori奔赴英国，在当地酒吧表演了一段时间。在这里，她获得了不少认同，并且发行了EP 专辑《me and a gun》。歌曲《me and a gun》是一首悲伤的、自传体的作品，讲述了一个有关强奸的故事。该曲获得了媒体积极的评价。当她之后在美国再度发行专辑后，受到巨大成功，但是不少歌迷却误以为她是英国人。
真正体现Amos个人风格，并且是她作为歌手兼作曲的第一张唱片《little earthquakes》发行于 1991 年底，无可争议地成为其经典作品。其中的歌曲《silent all these years》、《crucify》和《winter》等已经成为经典，Amos奠定了自己90 年代才华横溢的音乐家的地位。
1992 年，她发行了 EP《crucify》，其中翻唱了 nirvana 的《smells like teen spirit》和 led zeppelin 的《thank you》。 1994 年初的第 2 张专辑《under the pink》获得了巨大成功，销量达百万，登上英国榜冠军，并产生两首热门歌曲《god》和《cornflake girl》。此后，amos举办了一次长时间的、跨越三大洲的巡回演出。
1996 年，amos 发行了她的第 3 张专辑《boys for pele》，其中歌曲全部由她自己作曲并制作，风格多样，尽显她的才华。在诸多方面《boys for pele》使 amos 达到了寻求创造性的自由的最高峰，为她的事业展开了新的一页。
1998 年Amos发行了第四张专辑From the Choirgirl Hotel，这张专辑蕴含了她太多个人情感，尤其在她96、97年经历流产、情感破裂等一系列打击。1999年在完成了与Alanis Morrissette的巡演以后，她推出了双碟专辑To Venus and Back。2001年度，Amos发行了在Atlantic的最后一张专辑Strange Little Girls，之后改签了新公司Epic，并且在2002年度的10月份推出新专辑Scarlet's Walk。
